Hainan Pepper: Distinctive Spice from Warm, Humid Land

Hainan pepper is a major tropical spice crop produced across the province, with Dapo in Haikou among its best-known traditional origins. The Hainan Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reported in July 2025 that the province had 320,000 mu of pepper planting and output of about 40,000 tonnes.

Pepper vines grow in Hainan's warm and humid environment. After careful harvesting and processing, the fruit becomes an aromatic spice and an important symbol of the island's specialty agriculture.
